Meg is finally home and won’t be going anywhere for awhile now!
It has been hot out here this past week. Thursday’s record high of 97 F made it unbearably hot in our apartment. Friday was another scorcher but a bit cooler than Thursday. Since Meg finally is home we each took the day off yesterday and spent a few hours at Stinson Beach, and then drove up to the Point Reyes Lighthouse. I rented a car from Hertz and got upgraded to a Nissan 350Z convertible. The only downfall, I didn’t put any sunscreen on before the beach so I got a nice burn from the drive.
The beach was great. The sand was so hot you couldn’t walk on it more than a few steps if you were barefoot. One kid, and I use that loosely as he was probably early 20s, had one of foot in a cast while the other was barefoot. As he was walking through the sand, he kept stopping after every step to pour some of his beer onto his foot cause he couldn’t take the heat. I felt bad for the beer… The beach wasn’t over-crowded, but there were plenty of people taking in the great weather.
After realizing we both were starting to get sunburnt we packed up and headed north. Since it was a clear day, we went up to the Point Reyes Lighthouse. One of the notable points about the lighthouse is that this spot is supposedly the windiest place on the Pacific Coast and also the second most foggy place in North America. The last time Meg and I tried to go here we drove through 20 miles of fog just to get to the lighthouse’s parking lot, then walked almost a half-mile to the lighthouse’s visitor center only to find everything closed. The first visit was extremely eerie because as you are driving along you go by a bunch of ranches that all seem to be for milking cows. Well after driving through dense fog which you can only see about 20 - 50 feet in front of you and then these cow ranches makes me think this should be a setting for a horror movie. I’m glad yesterday’s visit was clear because the area is beautiful. To get down to the lighthouse you have to walk down a series of steps and in total is around a 300 foot decline. There’s a sign at the top that said something about the climb equating to climbing a 30 story building. In case you need it, there’s a water bubbler at the top for when you are out of breath from climbing back up. Here are a few shots:
Finally to cap the day off I took a drive down to the Pacifica Pier while Meg went out for a ladies night. I’ve shot this once before but figured since I was going to get there after the sunset I’d try a different perspective. The pier is basically a big “L” with the top coming off of land. Check out this overhead shot on Google Maps. Pacifica is another place that is notorious for fog so it was cool to grab a couple shots with a clear sky.
Here are the shots from the first time I visited the pier:
